2018/06/14

On June 14, 2018, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US).

Xi Jinping pointed out that both China and the US share extensive and common interests and shoulder important responsibilities in safeguarding world peace and stability and promoting global development and prosperity. The China-US cooperation can accomplish major achievements conducive to both countries and the world. It is hoped that teams of the two sides will reinforce communication, enhance mutual trust, manage and control differences, and expand cooperation according to the consensus reached by President Donald Trump and me during the meeting in Beijing, so as to promote the development of bilateral relations along the right track and better benefit the two peoples and the people of all countries in the world.

Xi Jinping stressed that it is an important enlightenment derived from the nearly 40 years of development process of bilateral relations after China and the US established diplomatic relations that the two countries should always view each other's strategic intentions in a correct way, and respect and take care of each other's core interests and major concerns. China is always committed to developing cooperative relations with the US featuring mutual respect, equal treatment, and mutual benefit and win-win results. The two sides should strengthen high-level exchanges and institutional dialogues, expand cooperation in various fields, and expand local and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, in a bid to continuously cement the foundation of bilateral relations. It is hoped that the US will prudently and properly handle sensitive issues including the Taiwan problem and economic and trade frictions to avoid major interferences in bilateral relations. China and the US should enhance communication and coordination in major international and regional and global issues, and work together as constructors of world peace and vindicators of international order.

Mike Pompeo first conveyed President Donald Trump's greetings to President Xi Jinping, especially Donald Trump's appreciation for President Xi Jinping's important advice and help over the Korean Peninsula issue. Mike Pompeo expressed that the US-China relations have enjoyed continuous development under the joint guidance of the two heads of state. The US attaches importance to developing relations with China, and is willing to, together with the Chinese side, enhance communication, well handle prominent issues, deepen practical cooperation in various fields, and meet international and regional challenges with joint efforts. The US appreciates China's vital role in the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, and stands ready to make joint efforts with China to promote realization of the denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Xi Jinping asked Mike Pompeo to convey his greetings to President Donald Trump. He stressed that President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un realized a historic meeting this time and achieved positive outcomes, which was an important step in the process of the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. China extends heartfelt congratulations to both sides. The Korean Peninsula issue is complex and its solution must be a gradual process. China hopes the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will adhere to mutual respect and meet each other halfway, and continuously make unremitting efforts for the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue. China firmly adheres to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, upholds peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, and sticks to the settlement of issues through dialogue and negotiation. China is willing to continue to play an active and constructive role, and work with all parties concerned including the US to promote the process of the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue.

Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi and others attended the meeting.
