2019/11/22

On November 22, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping extended his welcome for Kristalina Georgieva’s first visit to China as IMF Managing Director. Xi Jinping pointed out, the current global economic growth is slowing down with increasing downward risks and rising protectionism. Multilateralism and free trade are facing severe challenges. Therefore, the international community has higher expectations for the role of the IMF. I hope that under your administration, the IMF will further improve the international currency and its governance system, and enhance the representation and voice of emerging markets and developing countries.

Xi Jinping pointed out, the Chinese side actively advocates extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits in global governance, stands firm against protectionism and upholds the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core. It is hoped that the IMF will continue to play an active role in the global trade agenda, safeguard a fair and open global financial market, and advance the development of the international order in a more just and rational manner. China and the IMF have carried out sound cooperation in strengthening the capacity building of countries in the Belt and Road Initiative and improving the soft environment in recent years. The Chinese side is willing to continuously deepen cooperation with the IMF.

Xi Jinping stressed, China's economic development has great resilience, potential and room for maneuvering. The long-term positive trend of China's economic growth would not change. I am full of confidence in China's development as China will stick to the new vision for development, advance high-quality economic development, continuously promote a higher level of opening-up, and bring more opportunities to the world economic growth.

Kristalina Georgieva extended her congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. She said, China will completely eliminate poverty by 2020, which is of landmark significance for China and the world. China has achieved sustained and strong economic growth through reform and opening-up. It is believed that China will continue to remain open to the outside world in various fields including finance and capital. The IMF attaches great importance to its relationship with China and will continue to deepen cooperation with China. A certain country has provoked trade disputes and the world economy is currently in a difficult period. The IMF firmly supports and safeguards free and open trade and strives to achieve peaceful trade relations. The IMF is ready to carry out reforms in line with the needs of the times and enhance the weight of emerging economies. The IMF stands ready to work with the Chinese side to advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and strengthen cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative to help developing countries achieve better development.
