2020/08/21

On 21 August, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, sent a verbal message to President Arif Alvi of Pakistan.

In his message, Xi expressed appreciation to President Alvi for sending a congratulatory message to the Second Conference of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Political Parties Joint Consultation Mechanism (JCM), hailing it as a reflection of the Pakistani President’s commitment to and support for Pak-China relations and CPEC.

Xi described China and Pakistan as good brothers and good partners sharing a special friendship. He noted the importance of CPEC, an iconic project for Belt and Road cooperation, to deepening the China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership and building an even closer community with a shared future between the two countries. He recognized the role of closer friendly consultations and growing political consensus between Chinese and Pakistani political parties in advancing the CPEC project and high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

Xi stressed that the global fight against COVID-19 has proven that only mutual support, solidarity and cooperation could lead mankind to a victory against the disease. China stands ready to work with Pakistan to build a closer community with a shared future, promote solidarity and cooperation among regional countries, and maintain the good momentum of peace and development in the region.

In his earlier congratulatory message to the Conference, Alvi commended President Xi’s vision for a community with a shared future for mankind and the Belt and Road Initiative as representing cooperation, peace and development and meeting the aspirations of people around the world. He thanked China in particular for providing timely medical assistance to help Pakistan in its fight against COVID-19. “We will continue to enhance cultural exchanges and mutual trust between China and Pakistan,” he wrote. “Pakistan and China have common goals in the region and both are making serious efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.”

The CPEC JCM was set up in 2019 by the CPC and the ruling party and major opposition parties in Pakistan. The Second Conference of the CPEC JCM was organized by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee and held via video link on 20 August.
