Wang Yi Attends and Addresses the Symposium on the International Situation and China's Foreign Relations in 2020

2020/12/11

On December 11, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the opening ceremony of the Symposium on the International Situation and China's Foreign Relations in 2020 in Beijing and delivered a keynote speech entitled "China's Diplomacy in the Midst of Once-in-a-Century Changes and Pandemic: Being Responsible to the Country and Doing its Part for the World".

Wang Yi said, 2020 is a watershed for the course of human history, a year of milestone in the country's development, and also a groundbreaking year in the journey of China's diplomacy. President Xi Jinping, with the global vision and responsibility of the leader of a major country, has carried out a series of head-of-state diplomatic activities in such innovative ways as "cloud diplomacy", building up consensus for the global fight against COVID-19 and charting a course for China's diplomacy. Guided by the head-of-state diplomacy, the diplomatic front has focused on combating the pandemic in solidarity, risen up to difficulties and taken initiatives to respond to changes in an effort to be responsible to the country and do its part for the world. What's more, the diplomatic front, by fighting the COVID-19 virus and the international political virus in parallel, has made new contributions to safeguarding the national interests and the global stability. This is mainly reflected in the following eight aspects:

First, engaging in global cooperation against the pandemic. By throwing itself actively into domestic and global anti-pandemic efforts, China's diplomacy has practiced the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind with concrete actions and demonstrated the image of a responsible major country.

Second, insisting on opening wider to the outside world and mutually beneficial cooperation. China is opening increasingly wider its doors to the outside world for cooperation and navigating headwinds to pursue mutually beneficial cooperation with all the other countries, injecting momentum and confidence into the recovery of the world economy.

Third, empowering the stability of the international situation. We have actively planned and managed the relations with major countries and continued to push the building of a framework for relations with major countries featuring overall stability and balanced development.

Fourth, further deepening and strengthening the community with a shared future with neighboring countries. We have actively carried out anti-pandemic and other kinds of pragmatic cooperation with neighboring countries to deepen the alignment of interests and strengthen people-to-people ties, marking a solid step toward the community with a shared future.

Fifth, protecting and expanding the common interests of developing countries. Adhering to the right approach to justice and interests, we share a common destiny with the developing countries in the anti-virus battle and economic recovery. China's solidarity and cooperation with the developing countries have withstood the new test and taken on a fresh look.

Sixth, actively participating in the reform of the global governance system. President Xi Jinping has comprehensively expounded China's view on global governance and brought forward China's proposals for and China's solutions to tackling global challenges at a series of important multilateral meetings.

Seventh, firmly defending national interests and dignity. China explicitly opposes the politicization and stigmatization associated with the virus, firmly defends the path and system chosen by the Chinese people and safeguards the country's sovereignty, security and development interests.

Eighth, acting wholeheartedly upon the principle of "diplomacy for the people". Being people-centered, we were greatly concerned with the life of overseas Chinese amid the virus outbreak and provided consular protection for them around the globe in order to effectively pass on the care and warmth of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council to overseas citizens, overseas compatriots and those studying abroad.

Wang Yi stressed, 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the beginning of the 14th Five-year Plan. China will start a new journey of building a modern socialist country in all respects and stride forward to the second centennial goal. The diplomatic front has great mission on its shoulder as the 100-year-old Party will usher into a new chapter. Guided by the Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy, we will forge ahead with determination in spite of difficulties and challenges, spearhead for opportunities in the crisis and break a new ground amid changes to advance the major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era. China's diplomacy will keep serving domestic development strategies, boosting the global economic recovery, promoting the building of a new type of international relations, deepening regional and international cooperation, and participating in the process of global governance reform, enhancing mutual understanding of countries and building the community with a shared future for mankind.

Wang Yi said, the wheel of the human history rolls on, and the development trend of the times still cannot be held back. China will always stand on the side of historical justice and international morality, and move forward hand in hand with other countries to jointly create a better tomorrow for the world. China's diplomacy will continue to be responsible to the country and do its part for the world, making new and greater contributions to realizing the Chinese dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The Symposium on the International Situation and China's Foreign Relations in 2020 was co-hosted by the China Institute of International Studies and the China Foundation for International Studies.
