China and Cambodia Reach Important Consensus on South China Sea Issue
2016/04/22

On April 22, 2016, when meeting the press jointly with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhon of Cambodia, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China and Cambodia exchanged in-depth views on current situation of the South China Sea during my visit to Cambodia this time. Cambodia supports China's stance and proposition on the South China Sea issue and China also supports Cambodia's stance. Both sides reached the following important consensus: the two countries respect the rights of sovereign states and contracting states of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to independently choose disputes solutions; the international judicial institutions or arbitral tribunals should fully respect declarations of optional exception made by each country under Article 298 of the UNCLOS; the two countries support parties directly concerned to solve territorial and maritime disputes peacefully through friendly consultations and negotiations in accordance with the international law and provisions of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC); and the two countries should enhance mutual trust and strengthen cooperation to well safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea.
