China and the Philippines Issue a Joint Statement

On April 28, 2005, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of the Philippines issued a joint statement in Manila. The statement declared that President Hu Jintao pays a state visit to the Philippines from April 26 to 28, 2005. During the visit, President Hu Jintao and President Arroyo have exchanged in-depth views on the bilateral relations and the international and regional issues of common concern. They both believed that China-Philippine relations have entered the golden period of partnership. Both countries are determined to establish the strategic and cooperative relations that aim at the peace and development.

Both sides agreed to maintain frequent high-level exchanges and contacts, intensify efforts to advance the economic and trade cooperation, further the agricultural cooperation, strengthen the cooperation in infrastructure construction, expand the cooperation in mineral resource exploitation, maintain close personnel exchanges, promote defense and security cooperation and continue to be committed to safeguarding the peace and stability in South China Sea region. They expressed their welcome to the agreement on joint work in the ocean and earthquake of South China Sea signed by the petroleum corporations of China, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Both sides expressed that they will continue to commit themselves to advancing the strategic partnership towards peace and prosperity between China and ASEAN, establishing China-ASEAN free trade area and boosting East Asian cooperation process.

The Philippines reaffirmed its adherence to one-China policy and its support and appreciations to China for China's efforts to peacefully solve the Taiwan issue and realize the country's reunification.
