President of the Central African Republic (CAR) Bozize Meets with Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Chinese Embassy in the Central African Republic
2007/01/06

On January 5, 2007, President of the Central African Republic (CAR) Francois Bozize met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing at the Presidential Palace.

Bozize said the CAR and China share a profound friendship and bilateral cooperation in all areas has continuously made new achievements. The Central African Republic thanks for China's support and hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in the areas of waterpower, agriculture, communications, mining and infrastructure construction. Bozize was sorry he had not been able to attend the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) as he had wished due to domestic affairs, and expressed his strong aspiration to visit China again. Bozize reaffirmed that the CAR government and he himself adhere to the one-China policy and support China's grand cause of reunification.

Li said China attached great importance to its ties with the Central African Republic. Recent years have witnessed remarkable effects in mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries and China is ready to continue to help with the African country's development within its available resources, Li said. China appreciates the African country's adherence to the one-China policy and is ready to work with the CAR to push bilateral political and trade ties to a new level within the framework of the follow-up actions of the FOCAC.

Following the meeting, Bozize held a grand ceremony to award a Medal of Grand Officer of the Central African Republic to Li for his important contributions to China-CAR friendly cooperation.

On the same day, Li held talks with CAR Prime Minister Elie Dote and Foreign Minister Come Zoumara and both sides signed three documents including the agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the two governments, the agreement on remitting due debts owed by the CAR and the exchange of notes on China granting zero-tariff treatment to some CAR exports to China. On the evening of the same day, President Bozize and his wife hosted a banquet in honor of Li and his delegation at the Presidential Palace, which CAR Parliament Speaker Célestin Leroy Gaombalet, Prime Minister Elie Dote, as well as Foreign Minister Come Zoumara and other six ministers attended. Li also called on and expressed his sincere solicitude to the staff of the Chinese Embassy in the CAR, aid specialists, and all members of the medical team and Chinese-funded companies.

Foreign Minister Li arrived in the CAR capital of Bangui by plane on the morning of January 5 after his Chad visit. He was warmly welcomed by the CAR foreign minister and minister for planning and cooperation at the airport.
