Wang Yi: Russia is an Important Strategic Partner of the Joint Construction of the "Belt and Road"

On May 26, 2017, when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia after their talks in Moscow, Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed that China regards Russia as an important strategic partner of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road".

Wang Yi said that President Vladimir Putin attended the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in China not long ago, making significant contributions to the success of the forum. Regarding Russia as an important strategic partner of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", China believes that the country will play a unique, irreplaceable and important role in the process of the "Belt and Road" construction. Enhancing coordination and cooperation between both sides and jointly constructing the "Belt and Road" will promote respective development and revitalization as well as contribute to the peace and development of the region and even Eurasia.

Wang Yi introduced that at present, works concerning the integration of the "Belt and Road" initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union are being advanced steadily. Both sides are conducting consultation on economic cooperation and partnership agreement, which is expected to be reached at an early date and make visible achievements. China and the Eurasian Economic Commission will speed up the research and formulation of the cooperation project list of the docking, which will play a guiding and leading role in cooperation among enterprises of both countries as well as other countries. The Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia will carry out feasibility study on the establishment of Eurasian Economic Partnership, and plan to initiate relevant process in the near future.

Wang Yi expressed that China welcomes and supports the "Ice Silk Road" initiative proposed by Russia, and stands ready to, together with the Russian side and other parties, jointly explore Arctic routes. Russia recently issued its economic security strategy for the period until 2030, which highly matches with China's national development strategies including the "two centenary goals". China is willing to work with Russia to further align the long-term development conceptions of both countries, expand new cooperation areas, and cultivate new growth points for cooperation, in a bid to constantly inject new impetus into China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination.
