On February 18, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland of Canada on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Wang Yi expressed that Chinese Premier and Canadian Prime Minister successfully exchanged mutual visits within a short period of time last year, reaching important consensus on deepening bilateral cooperation. At present, China-Canada relations maintain a sound development momentum, and both sides show mutual understanding and respect on issues related to each other's core interests. China is willing to expand cooperation in various fields with Canada to promote bilateral strategic partnership to a new level. China actively adheres to the opening-up policy. China and Canada could jointly push forward global trade liberalization, so as to advance globalization towards a more inclusive and mutually beneficial direction.

Chrystia Freeland said that Canada-China relations have yielded important progress last year. The Canadian side is willing to work with China to, on the basis of mutual benefit and win-win results, continuously deepen economic and trade cooperation, step up the feasibility study over a free trade agreement with China, set a new benchmark in the development of bilateral relations and send a positive signal of jointly safeguarding global trade liberalization to the international community. Canada attaches importance to China's important role in international affairs and is willing to push forward multilateralism together with China.
