2019-08-02 16:36

On August 2, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at request with Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland of Canada in Bangkok, Thailand.

Wang Yi expressed, the Canadian side, including Mme. Foreign Minister, has expressed more than once that the Canadian side highly values its relations with China and is willing to make efforts to this regard. The Chinese side appreciates such a stance of the Canadian side. But it is a regret that the Canadian side arbitrarily detained a Chinese citizen in December last year, which aroused strong indignation of the Chinese people and brought serious difficulties to China-Canada relationship. The Chinese government is firmly committed to protect the legitimate rights and just interests of Chinese citizens and companies. We hope that this issue will be properly resolved as soon as possible so as to bring China-Canada relations back to the right and healthy track at an early date.

Chrystia Freeland said, there was no historical grudge between Canada and China. It is indeed heartbreaking that Canada-China relations are what they are today. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries. The Canadian side values the relations with China and is willing to work with the Chinese side for the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.
