On August 14, 2023, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with visiting UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the current international security situation, arms control and non-proliferation, and AI security governance, among others.

Ma Zhaoxu said that in the face of the complex and volatile international situation, President Xi Jinping has put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and actively advocated a new approach of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. China attaches importance to the New Agenda for Peace put forth by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and is willing to deepen cooperation with the United Nations in the field of arms control and non-proliferation and build a human community with a shared future.

Izumi Nakamitsu appreciated China's efforts and contributions to promoting the international arms control and non-proliferation process and the political settlement of regional hotspot issues. She said that the United Nations is ready to strengthen communication and cooperation with China and work together to safeguard world peace and security.
