On February 7, 2023, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong met with Japanese Ambassador to China Hideo Tarumi.

Sun Weidong briefed on the significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. He stressed that China's foreign policy has always been stable, consistent and transparent. China's development will bring greater opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Japan and strongly inject stability and certainty into the world.

Sun Weidong said, this year marks the 45th anniversary of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. The two sides should follow the important common understandings reached by the two state leaders, abide by the principles enshrined in the four political documents between China and Japan, defend the political and legal foundation of bilateral relations, and follow through on the important political consensus of being cooperative partners not threats to each other and supporting each other's peaceful development, so as to promote the sound and steady development of China-Japan relations on the right track. The two sides should work along the same direction and actively interact with each other, properly manage  differences and disputes, uphold and deepen practical cooperation in various fields featuring mutual benefit and win-win results, and work together to build a China-Japan relationship that meets the needs of the new era.

Hideo Tarumi expressed that the Japanese side is glad to see China's development and attaches importance to its relations with China. The Japanese side is willing to work with the Chinese side to take the 45th anniversary of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship as an opportunity to implement the important common understandings reached by leaders of the two countries, strengthen dialogue and communication at all levels, and promote the building of constructive and stable Japan-China relations.
