On June 26, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress (NPC) met with Komura Masahiko, Chairman of Diet's Japan-China Friendship League.

Wu Bangguo said that the practice for the development of China-Japan relationship has proved that China-Japan friendliness is in the interest of both sides and conducive to the peace and development of Asia and the world, that the friendly relationship between China and Japan is hard won and should be especially cherished, and that the adherence to China-Japan Joint Statement and other 2 political documents is the political foundation for the development of bilateral relations.

Wu Bangguo pointed out China-Japan relationship is facing some difficulties, which we are reluctant to see. The root cause for such difficult situation is that Japan continues to hurt the feeling of the Chinese people on the historical issues and the question of Taiwan.

He stressed that the leaders of both countries and knowledgeable people from all walks of life should proceed from a strategic perspective, implement in earnestness the 5-point proposals put forward by President Hu Jintao, adhere to the principle of "taking history as the mirror and looking into the future", properly handle the historical issues and the question of Taiwan and pull China-Japan relationship back to normal tracks. He hoped that the Diet's Japan-China Friendship League could carry forward the friendly tradition and continue to play active role in this field.

Komura Masahiko said that Japan-China relations are of equal importance to both China and Japan and indispensable for maintaining the peace, stability and development of this region and the world. The current bilateral relations are facing some worrying situation. Strengthening exchanges and enhancing understanding and trust will be helpful for reversing such situation. The Japanese side is willing to join hands with China to expand the economic cooperation between the two sides, consolidate the foundation of bilateral relations and continue to be committed to properly handling the problems occurred during the development process of bilateral relations.

Japanese guests arrived in Beijing at the invitation of China-Japan Friendship Association. Chen Haosu, Chairman of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, was present at the meeting.
