Chinese Ambassador to Japan Chen Jian Strongly Protests the Decision by the Japanese Government to Allow Lee Teng-hui to Visit Japan

2001-04-23 15:03
On April 20, Chinese Ambassador to Japan Chen Jian made solemn representations with Permanent Vice Minister of the Japanese Foreign Ministry Kawashima against the decision by the Japanese government to allow Lee Teng-hui to visit Japan.

Chen pointed out that the visit to Japan by Lee Teng-hui for so-called "medical reasons" is a political plot conspired by Lee and Chen Shui-bian and other forces seeking "Taiwan independence". The adamant decision by the Japanese government to allow Lee to visit Japan on "humanitarian" grounds trampled on the three political documents between China and Japan. The Chinese side lodges its strong protests against the wrong decision by the Japanese government to allow Lee to visit Japan disregarding the solemn position by the Chinese government.

Kswashima said that the Japanese side will strictly limit the duration, places and purpose of Lee's visit and will not allow him to engage in activities other than medical treatments.

He also said that the Japanese government would stick to the position on the Taiwan question set forth in Japan-China Joint Statement and will not support "two China's" or "one China, one Taiwan". The above position will not be changed in the future.
