Wang Yi Holds a Group Meeting with Arab-Islamic Foreign Ministers

2023-11-30 23:00

On November 29, 2023 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a group meeting with Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki, Foreign Minister of Türkiye Hakan Fidan, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambry Abd Kadir, UAE Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Almarar and Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Wang Yi said, a few days ago, Arab-Islamic foreign ministers paid a group visit to China. They had in-depth discussions on the Palestinian-Israeli issue, reached important consensus and agreed to hold a high-level meeting at the Security Council at an early date. Today is the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This meeting is being held on this special day with a very clear objective, that is, to implement a comprehensive ceasefire and end the fighting, protect civilians effectively, ensure humanitarian assistance, and set the direction for a comprehensive and permanent settlement of the Palestinian question. China's position is clear and firm. That is, the result of a temporary ceasefire agreement should be a comprehensive ceasefire, not a resumption of the fighting; a comprehensive ceasefire is not only the end of the war but also the beginning of the peace process. The Security Council should send a unanimous message in this regard.

Arab and Islamic countries thanked China for its moral support to Palestine and its efforts for regional peace, and fully agreed with China's relevant position. A temporary ceasefire should be the beginning of peace, achieving a comprehensive ceasefire rather than a return to conflict. Efforts should be made to increase humanitarian assistance, ensure access to humanitarian supplies, stop the forced displacement of the Palestinian people and stop taking civilians in Gaza as hostages. Security Council resolutions should be implemented. All parties hope that this high-level meeting will make a loud voice on a ceasefire and cessation of fighting and ensure humanitarian assistance. All parties appreciate that China has always stood on the side of peace and justice and the right side of history. They look forward to China's leadership in promoting concerted efforts by all parties to explore a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question on the basis of the two-state solution.

Wang Yi said, China holds a highly consistent position with the majority of Arab and Islamic countries, and appreciates Qatar and Egypt for facilitating the temporary ceasefire agreement, which is an important step in the right direction. Once the window for peace opens, it should not be closed again, as this concerns human morality and basic conscience. China is ready to work closely with all parties to encourage the Security Council to be more active and productive, listen more to the calls of Arab and Islamic countries and take further meaningful actions. China will continue to work for a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question at an early date.
