Wang Yi: China's Cooperation with the Maldives Has No Political Intention and Seeks No Geographical Interests

2019-09-20 15:37

On September 20, 2019, when holding talks with Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid of the Maldives, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed, China-Maldives friendly cooperation is for all the people of the Maldives and transcends party differences. It will not be influenced by government changes in the Maldives and does not target at any third party. China's cooperation with the Maldives aims to improve the well-being of the Maldivian people. It has no political intention, nor does it seek geographical interests. The Chinese side will always act in the principle of pursuing the greater good and shared interests to provide help for the Maldivian side within its capacity according to will and the need of the Maldivian side. China will not attach political conditions, interfere in the internal affairs of the Maldives, but aim to help developing countries including the Maldivian side to enhance their own development capacity. Some so-called allegation that the Maldives has fallen into China's debt trap is groundless.

Wang Yi noted, just as President Xi Jinping said, China will not take even a ray of sunshine or a wisp of cloud from the Maldives. We believe China-Maldives relations will be conducive for both countries to complementing strength and realizing common development, and will also continuously enjoy the wholehearted support from various circles of the Maldives.

Abdulla Shahid expressed, no country in this world generously supports the economic and social development and livelihood improvement of the Maldives like China. China has helped the Maldives build infrastructure such as China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, international airport and housing, and provided lots of help and loan. There is no so-called "debt trap" at all. Such allegation is nonsense.
