On 12 January, President Musharraf of Pakistan delivered a TV address, expressing the determination of the Pakistani Government to crack down upon the domestic religious extremist forces and underlining its position for a settlement of disputes with India through dialogue. Such a move contributes to the reduction of regional tension, conforms to the consensus of the international community against terrorism and serves the long-term interest of Pakistan. We wish to express our appreciation and welcome.

We understand and respect the efforts by the Pakistani Government to safeguard domestic stability. We believe that, under the leadership of President Musharraf, Pakistan will continue to enjoy national unity, social stability and economic development.

Both Pakistan and India are important countries of South Asia. We hope that Pakistan and India adopt positive steps to reduce their tensions as soon as possible and resolve their disputes through peaceful means and dialogue. This not only serves the fundamental interest of Pakistan and India, but also contributes to peace, stability and development in South Asia.
