Wang Yi Comments on Plan of the US to Deploy THAAD System in ROK

2016-07-09 09:07

On July 9, 2016 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Colombo in an interview that China has made clear its solemn and just stance on the decision of the US to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in the Republic of Korea (ROK). We believe that the deployment of the THAAD system goes far beyond the defense need of the Korean Peninsula. Any justification to this cannot hold water. We have every reason and right to question the real scheme behind this action. We demand the US not to build its own security on the basis of jeopardizing other countries’ security and not to damage other countries’ legitimate security interests on the pretext of so-called security threats. We also hope that friends in the ROK can think calmly about whether deploying the THAAD system will truly conduce to the ROK’s security, to peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and to the settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. All parties concerned must act prudently so as to not make big mistakes.
