On August 31, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Park Jin at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that China's policy toward the ROK has maintained continuity and stability. The development of bilateral relations has an internal driving force and inevitable logic, and should not be influenced by a third party. China and the ROK should keep to the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, stick to the right direction of friendly cooperation, continue to enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples, guard against interference from external factors, refrain from ideological confrontation, jointly push for the steady and long-term development of bilateral relations, and open up the next 30 years of more sustainable, more resilient and closer cooperation. Mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation is the ballast of bilateral relations. With enormous economic development potential and a large market, China is accelerating the building of a new system for a higher-level open economy and expanding China-ROK cooperation will help the ROK achieve sustainable prosperity and development. Wang Yi expressed hope that the ROK will strengthen its strategic autonomy, reject various anti-globalization maneuvers and attempts to decouple or sever industrial and supply chains, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in various fields, so as to better benefit the people of the two countries. China supports the ROK in playing a positive role in promoting trilateral cooperation as the chair of the China-Japan-ROK cooperation.

Park Jin expressed sincere sympathy over the recent floods in some parts of China and extended wishes that the 19th Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou will be a complete success and a grand event of peace and unity. Park Jin said that the ROK and China are close neighbors and important partners. This year marks the beginning of the second 30 years of relations between the ROK and China, and the government of President Yoon Suk Yeol speaks highly of the fruitful results achieved in bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations and will continue to value and grow relations between the ROK and China. The ROK side looks forward to enhancing high-level exchanges, dialogue and communication with China, strengthening people-to-people and cultural exchanges, improving mutual understanding and actively building sound and mature ROK-China relations. The ROK has no intention to engage in decoupling targeting a specific country on the issue of industrial and supply chains, and "de-sinicization" is neither possible nor desirable. The ROK side is ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with China, keep industrial and supply chains stable and unimpeded, and jointly promote regional economic growth.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on issues including Japan's discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean and the Korean Peninsula issue.
