Wang Yi Meets with Singaporean Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan

On July 12, 2023 local time, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Singaporean Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan in Jakarta.

Wang Yi said that thanks to the strategic guidance of and mutual trust and friendship between the leaders of the two countries, China-Singapore relations have maintained a sound momentum of development. In March this year, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong jointly announced to upgrade China-Singapore relations to an all-around high-quality future-oriented partnership, which has fully demonstrated high-level friendship and mutual trust between China and Singapore, and also injected a strong impetus into the development of bilateral relations. China looks forward to working with Singapore to follow the goals jointly identified by the two sides to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields and further facilitate personnel exchanges between the two sides.

Wang Yi said that this year is important in bridging the past and the future for China-ASEAN relations, and the two sides should take the opportunity of commemorating the 20th anniversary of China's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia to demonstrate high-level mutual trust, open up new prospects of cooperation and continue to make China-ASEAN relations the forerunner. China appreciates Singapore for playing a positive role in China-ASEAN relations, and expects Singapore to make new contribution to all-round cooperation between the two sides. Under the current circumstances, China and ASEAN should accelerate the negotiations on a Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, jointly safeguard the global free trade system, adhere to the ASEAN-centered and effective regional architecture, and jointly safeguard the overall situation of peace, development and cooperation in the region.

Vivian Balakrishnan said that Singapore and China have maintained close high-level interaction, the bilateral cooperation mechanism meetings have been fruitful, and key cooperation projects have yielded fruitful results. Singapore is ready to work with China to follow the new positioning of Singapore-China relations, and expand cooperation between the two sides in various fields. Singapore looks forward to more direct flights between Singapore and China to further facilitate people-to-people exchanges. China is the biggest trading partner of ASEAN, and Belt and Road cooperation has delivered tangible benefits to the two sides. Singapore advocates that countries should respect each other, co-exist in peace and pursue mutually beneficial cooperation, and expects China to enhance mutual trust with ASEAN to jointly promote stability and prosperity.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern.
