On June 18, 2014, Yang Jiechi met with General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam in Hanoi.

Yang Jiechi said that as close neighbors, both China and Viet Nam are in a critical period of reform and development and share extensive common interests. In the face of the complicated and ever-changing international and regional situation, both sides should eliminate barriers, deepen cooperation and seek common development. China attaches great importance to the China-Viet Nam comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation. Currently, the China-Viet Nam relations face severe difficulties because of the maritime issues. However, no matter how difficult the situation is, it must be solved by every means as early as possible. Based on this strategic consideration and high attention paid to the overall situation of the China-Viet Nam relations, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government send me to pay a special visit and discuss with Viet Nam on how to properly handle the current maritime situation, so as to guide the bilateral relations back to the right track and continue moving forward at an early date.

Yang Jiechi comprehensively expounded on China's relevant principles and positions and stressed that in the light of being highly responsible for the history and the two peoples, the two sides should properly solve the maritime issues so as to jointly safeguard the overall situation of the bilateral relations. The two sides should stick to bilateral communication to stabilize the situation as soon as possible. He hoped that Viet Nam will adopt practical actions and create conditions for the two sides to solve the problems through consultation and to restore normal bilateral cooperation.

Nguyễn Phú Trọng said that the Party, government and people of Viet Nam attach great importance to the friendship between the Viet Nam and Chinese peoples and the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation between the two countries. Viet Nam takes it as a priority in its diplomacy to maintain, consolidate and develop relations between the two parties and two countries. No matter how difficult it would be, Viet Nam is willing to maintain contacts and communication with China, take the overall situation into consideration, and try to find a proper solution to settle the issues. And this is the consistent position of Viet Nam. Viet Nam thanks the Party and government of China for sending State Councilor Yang Jiechi to visit Viet Nam under the current circumstances, which is of great significance. Viet Nam is willing to have candid and sincere communication with China, properly handle the relevant maritime issues, and control the situation. Viet Nam also hopes to continue implementing all the consensus and agreements reached by the two countries and push forward cooperation in all fields.

On the same day, Yang Jiechi also met with Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng of Viet Nam, and the two sides exchanged views on the bilateral relations and the maritime issues.
