Wang Yi Meets with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son

On July 13, 2023 local time, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in Jakarta at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that this year, China and Vietnam have taken the 15th anniversary of the establishment of China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership as an opportunity to carry out intensive high-level interactions. The two sides reaffirmed the importance and priority of China-Vietnam relations in their respective foreign policies and stressed the need to strengthen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, which has enriched the China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership under the new circumstances. China is ready to work with Vietnam to strengthen strategic communication, consolidate strategic mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and promote people-to-people bonds, so that people of the two countries, especially the younger generation, will be more involved in China-Vietnam friendship and cooperation.

Wang Yi said that China and Vietnam are both communist-led socialist countries with the same political orientation, highly complementary economies and broad prospects for cooperation. The two sides should join hands to follow their respective modernization paths, strengthen the synergy of development strategies, promote infrastructure connectivity, especially the eastern line of the Trans-Asian Railway, and raise the level of trade and investment facilitation. China is willing to import more marketable Vietnamese products and welcomes the Vietnamese side to actively participate in the China-ASEAN Expo and the China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Wang Yi stressed that the two sides should follow the important common understandings on the proper handling of maritime issues reached by top leaders of the two parties and actively put them into practice, pay more attention to mutually beneficial cooperation, give full play to the role of existing mechanisms, properly manage the situation and advance cooperation, in a bid to provide stable expectations for the development of China-Vietnam relations. China is willing to work with ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, to promote the early conclusion of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

Bui Thanh Son said that the Vietnamese side spoke highly of the achievements in the development of Vietnam-China relations. Vietnam looks forward to closer high-level exchanges, stronger high-level strategic dialogue and effective implementation of the important common understandings reached by the top leaders of the two parties. Vietnam will work with China to jointly promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and continue to advance the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between Vietnam and China. Vietnam hopes to expand exports to China, and will actively participate in the China-ASEAN Expo and the CIIE. Vietnam is ready to properly handle maritime issues, among others.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on strengthening regional cooperation and stressed that they will work together to guard against various disturbances and take the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.
