Vice Premier Qian Qichen Met with Bahrain Foreign Minister

On May 17, 2002, Vice Premier Qian Qichen met with Sheikh Muhammad Bin Mubarak Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, at Zhongnanhai.

Qian said that the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Bahrain in all areas have attained great progress since they established diplomatic ties 13 years ago. The two countries share common or similar views on many international and regional issues and have been coordinating and cooperating well in this regard. There is a good political foundation and great potential for wider and deeper mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. China is willing to work with Bahrain to promote bilateral relations.

Muhammad said the current visit of Bahrain Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa 's to China is a great success. The signing of five cooperation pacts between the two countries on the previous day signals that bilateral ties have entered a new era. As permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China plays a constructive role on many major international issues. Bahrain places great importance on China's role in international affairs and is keen to enhance cooperation with China in various fields, including consultation and cooperation within the United Nations.

Qian and Muhammad also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern including the Iraq issue and the situation in the Middle East.
