Wang Yi Has a Phone Call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

On August 20, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the latter's request.

Wang Yi recalled Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's successful state visit to China in February this year, noting that the two heads of state reached new important common understandings on China-Iran cooperation and led China-Iran relations to a new height. The two sides are making all-out efforts to implement the important common understandings between the two heads of state and continuously push forward exchanges and cooperation in various fields. China is ready to work with Iran to continue firmly supporting each other on issues concerning their respective core interests, jointly oppose foreign interference, resist unilateral bullying acts, defend the sovereignty, security, and development interests of China and Iran, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries and international fairness and justice.

Wang Yi said that after the talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia in Beijing, the two sides continued to take steps to improve their relations, driving a "wave of reconciliation" in the Middle East. China appreciates Iran's correct decision and will continue to support Middle Eastern countries in exploring development paths that suit their national conditions, strengthening communication and dialogue, building strength through unity, and realizing good neighborliness and friendship.

Amir-Abdollahian said that the Iranian side attaches great importance to the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Iran and China, and expects to work with the Chinese side to maintain high-level exchanges, deepen cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and strengthen coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs. He thanked China for promoting the normalization of Iran-Saudi Arabia relations and highly appreciated China's constructive role in this regard.

The two sides had an exchange of views on the Iranian nuclear issue, and Amir-Abdollahian briefed Wang Yi on the latest progress in Iran's engagement with various parties. Wang Yi said that only by resuming full and effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action can the Iranian nuclear issue be fundamentally resolved. China is ready to strengthen coordination with Iran and other parties to steer the Iranian nuclear issue on a course conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on BRICS cooperation and other issues of mutual interest and concern.
