On November 18, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi sent a message of condolence to Syrian government over the passing of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.

Wang Yi said in his message that Mr. Walid al-Moallem has devoted all his life to defending the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. He stood up straight against might to safeguard the interest of Syria and the Syrian people, and fought tirelessly until the end of his life. His patriotism and professionalism are admirable and will be remembered. Al-Moallem, full of friendly feelings towards the Chinese people, has made important contributions to consolidating and developing the traditional friendly relations between China and Syria. China will, as always, support the Syrian government and people in safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and push forward the China-Syria traditional friendly relations.
