On January 31, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Faysal Mekdad at the latter's request.

Mekdad congratulated China on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and highly praised the remarkable achievements of China in various fields under the leadership of the CPC. Mekdad said that Syria adheres to one-China principle, and firmly stands with China on issues concerning China's core interests like Xinjiang and Hong Kong. Syria condemns unwarranted oppression and smears of the Western countries on China's anti-pandemic efforts, and will never forget that its earliest batch of foreign emergency medical supplies came from China. He hopes China will give positive consideration to providing Syria with vaccine support.

Wang Yi said, over ten years after the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, Syrian people have paid a tremendous price and sacrificed a lot for defending national dignity and maintaining national independence and sovereignty. Although the current situation of Syria has been cooled off, it still has a long way to go for Syria to restore the complete security and stability. The future of Syria should be independently decided by the Syrian people. The international community should follow the "Syrian-led and Syrian-owned" principle, and seek a political settlement that suits the circumstances of Syria and accommodates the concerns of various parties through inclusive political dialogue. The international community should work together to combat terrorism, and eradicate terrorist organizations designated by the UN Security Council in Syria.

Wang Yi said, as a good friend and a good partner of Syria, China firmly supports Syria's efforts to uphold national independence, and continues to speak up for Syria's legitimate rights and interests on multilateral occasions.

Wang Yi added, China and Syria supported and assisted each other in the fight against the pandemic, deepening the friendship between the two peoples. China has provided much-needed medical supplies to Syria to the best of its capability, and will continue to provide Syria with vaccine and emergency food aid for overcoming the pandemic at an early date.
