On July 6, 2023, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun met in Amman, the capital of Jordan, with Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen Hans Grundberg, and exchanged views with him on the Yemeni situation.

Zhai Jun noted that China supports the efforts to safeguard Yemen’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, supports the legal government of Yemen, and supports the political settlement of the Yemeni issue. China will continue to support the UN in playing its role as the main channel for just and balanced mediation, and stands ready to work with the UN and the international community to consolidate the positive momentum that has emerged in the Yemeni situation, and promote the early restoration of peace, stability and the normal order in Yemen.

Hans Grundberg said that China’s successful mediation for the improvement of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran has produced a positive impact on the Yemeni situation, and the UN attaches importance to the important role played by China on the Yemeni issue. The UN stands ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China to jointly work for the deescalation of the Yemeni situation and restart the process of a political settlement of the Yemeni issue.
