Xi Jinping Holds Talks with President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia

On March 25, 2015, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping expressed welcome to Serzh Sargsyan for his state visit to China and attendance of Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2015. Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relationship 23 years ago, our two countries have respected and supported each other, cooperated in an equal and mutually beneficial manner, coordinated and cooperated in international and regional affairs, and healthily and steadily advanced bilateral relations and thus scored important results.

Xi Jinping stressed that we should stick to the policy of long-term friendly cooperation, firmly support the system and path independently chosen by the other, firmly safeguard each other’s core interests and firmly back each other’s development and prosperity. Both sides should tap the potential in economic and trade cooperation and elevate the cooperation level. The Chinese government encourages Chinese enterprises to be actively involved in transportation, mineral products, electric power, information technology and infrastructure construction in Armenia. China will, within the framework of constructing the Silk Road Economic Belt, give full play to its own technology and equipment advantages to explore an appropriate cooperation pattern with Armenia, and hopes Armenia actively promote the cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and China. China will continue helping Armenia carry out Chinese teaching and offer more government scholarship for Armenian students who choose to study in China, and stands ready to enhance bilateral exchanges and interaction in culture, press and academia.

Serzh Sargsyan expressed that China is a good friend of Armenia and the exchanges between the two peoples could be traced back to the ancient Silk Road era. The profound friendship was forged between the two countries and peoples in the long history. After the independence of Armenia, bilateral cooperation in all areas has been constantly deepened and expanded and bilateral political mutual trust has been continuously strengthened. Armenia deeply appreciates China’s selfless political support and economic assistance to Armenia. China is the most important and preferential diplomatic orientation of Armenia, and Armenia hopes its vital infrastructure projects including highway and railway could be incorporated into the concept of the Silk Road Economic Belt and will promote Chinese education and set up Confucius Institutes in Armenia to boost bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges. They are willing to join efforts with China to push bilateral relations and cooperation in all fields to new highs.

Xi Jinping noted that enhancing coordination and cooperation in major international and regional issues conduces to safeguarding the common interests of the two countries as well as to promoting global and regional peace, security and stability. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression as well as the world anti-fascist war. During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, more than 6,000 Armenian soldiers from the Soviet Union Red Army joined the fight against the Japanese army in Northeast China. As victorious countries of the World War II, the two nations should jointly maintain international peace and justice along with all the peace-loving countries and peoples around the world.

Serzh Sargsyan said that China exerts an important influence on the international affairs and plays an important role in safeguarding global and regional peace and stability. China pursues a policy of equality among all countries regardless of their size and always develops relations with other countries based on equality and mutual respect. Armenia appreciates this. Armenia and China have conducted close cooperation in international multilateral organizations, and Armenia hopes to enhance cooperation with China and facilitate mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation between the two countries.

Serzh Sargsyan pointed out that the Chinese people made outstanding contributions to the victory of the world anti-fascist war, and the Armenian people are willing to, together with the Chinese people, commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the world anti-fascist war.

Serzh Sargsyan noted that Armenia firmly upholds the One China policy and firmly supports China to realize national unification at an early date, to which Xi Jinping appreciated.

Following the talks, the two heads of state together signed and issued the Joint Statement Between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Armenia on Further Developing and Deepening Friendly Cooperative Relations. They also witnessed the signing of the cooperative documents in such fields as economy, trade, finance, justice, law enforcement, customs, education and tourism.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcome ceremony for Serzh Sargsyan at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee Wang Huning, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee Li Zhanshu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Chen Zhu, State Councilor Yang Jiechi, Vice Chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Lin Wenyi and others were present.
