Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Holds Talks with Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili and Meets with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Askar Aytmatov

On April 28, 2004, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held talks in shanghai with Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili, who is paying an official visit to China and attending the 60th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the two sides exchanged views in depth on relations between the two countries and issues of common interest.

Li said that since the establishment of China-Georgia diplomatic relations in 1992, the two countries have steadily developed bilateral relations, deepened political mutual trust, gradually expanded cooperation in various fields, understood and supported each other on significant issues concerning state sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two countries and have always maintained good cooperation in international multi-lateral affairs.

Li noted China is pleased to see that the new Georgian government headed by President Eduard Saakashvili cherishes China-Georgia traditional friendship and attaches great importance to developing the relations with China. While putting much emphasis on the development of China-Georgia relations, China advocates that every country, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, is the member of the international community on an equal footing and should seek consensus while allowing differences and promote common development on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful coexistence. China stands ready to work together with the Georgian government to continuously push forward the relations between the two countries.

Li said that in recent years, China-Georgia economic and trade cooperation has enjoyed rapid development. Both China and Georgia are developing countries and are facing the great task of developing economy and improving people's livelihood. China would like to work together with Georgia to encourage and support the business communities of the two countries to strengthen exchanges, deepen understanding and cooperation on the basis of mutual complementarities of their advantages.

Li introduced China's stances on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet and appreciation for the Georgian government's adherence to the one-China policy.

Zurabishvili said that the Georgian government values its relations with China and highly praises China's advocation that countries, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are all equal. Georgia is thankful for the Chinese government's support to the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and would like to work together with China for the cooperation between the two countries in areas of political affairs, economy and trade, security, counter-terrorism, anti-drug campaign and international affairs. Georgia welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest in Georgia and to take part in its economic development.

Zurabishvili said that Georgia would as always adhere to the one-China policy and resolutely support China on significant issues concerning China's national unity and territorial integrity.

On the same day, Li met with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Askar Aytmatov in Shanghai. Li noted that the Chinese side attaches great importance to developing the good-neighborly and friendly cooperative relations with Kyrgyzstan. Since the establishment of China-Kyrgyzstan diplomatic relations over a decade ago, the two countries have trusted each other politically, carried out mutually beneficial cooperation economically and supported each other on the issue of combating the three forces of terrorism, splittism and extremism. With great potentials and bright prospects for cooperation between the two countries, China would like to make joint efforts with Kyrgyzstan to push forward the cooperation between the two countries in politics, economy and trade, international affairs and other fields. Li expressed his appreciation for the Kyrgyz government's adherence to the one-China policy.

Aytmatov spoke highly of China's efforts for the successful convening of the 60th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). He said that this Session would surely promote and strengthen cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Kyrgyzstan cherishes the bilateral relations and mutual trust between the two countries. Deepening Kyrgyzstan–China friendly cooperative relations is the consistent policy of the Kyrgyz government, which would like to push the bilateral relations to a new height. Aytmatov reiterated that the Kyrgyz government resolutely adheres to the one-China policy and stands ready to cooperate with China in combating the "three forces".
