Wen Jiabao Meets with Georgian President

On April 12, 2006, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen said that the two peoples share a time-honored traditional friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 14 years ago, bilateral cooperation in all areas has witnessed steady development. China attaches great importance to bilateral relations, respects the internal and external policies defined by Georgia according to its national conditions and would like to work with Georgia to push for long-term and steady development of bilateral relations based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.

When talking about bilateral economic and trade relations, Wen pointed out that both sides should give full play to their respective features and implement each other's advantages. He hoped that both sides will focus on strengthening cooperation in the areas of agriculture, science & technology and transportation and create conditions in various areas to attract investment from each other. It is believed that with joint efforts of both sides, bilateral economic and trade cooperation will surely achieve greater development.

Saakashvili noted that the friendship between the two peoples goes back to ancient times. In recent years, bilateral relations have been developing rapidly and economic and trade cooperation has scored positive results. Georgia positively looks at China's development and would like to learn from its experience in reform and opening up. Georgia would like to strengthen cooperation with China in the areas of economy & trade, human resources development, telecommunications, electric power, communication & transportation and tourism and push bilateral mutually beneficial cooperative relations to make new headway.
