Vice President Hu Jintao Met With His Micronesian Counterpart Redley Killion

On October 10, 2002, Vice President Hu Jintao met with Vice President Redley Killion of the Federated States of Micronesia and his party at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu extended a warm welcome to Killion for his first visit to China. He said that since full diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1989, bilateral relations have undergone stable development and both sides have seen rich fruits in the exchanges and cooperation in the fields such as business and trade, agriculture, fishery and culture. Provinces and counties of both countries have kept vigorous friendly exchanges and both sides have maintained good mutual support, coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs. He said that China thanks and appreciates the Micronesian government for its adherence to the One China policy, conducts no official exchanges with Taiwan and offers precious support to China on the Taiwan question. Hu said that China attaches great importance to its relations with Micronesia and is willing to work with the Micronesian side to maintain healthy and sustainable development of friendly bilateral relations on the basis of Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

On regional situation and regional economic cooperation, Hu said that China is pleased to see regional economic cooperation in the South Pacific area has entered a new stage as the hot issues in the South Pacific area have cooled down since last year with improved security situation, and Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations has officially taken effect. He said that China sincerely hopes the situation in that area remains stable and the countries there achieve sustainable development. He said that China values friendly cooperation with all countries in the South Pacific and is willing to work together with Micronesia and its neighbors to boost mutually beneficial cooperation.

Killion expressed his appreciation to Vice President Hu Jintao for his warm invitation and warm reception, and agreed with Hu's positive evaluation about Micronesia-China relations. He said that this is his first trip to China and he hopes to increase mutual understanding, promote mutual cooperation between the two countries and learn China's experience of economic development through this visit. Killion said that over the 13 years since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic relations, friendly cooperation in various fields between both sides has developed continuously. The Micronesian government and people are grateful for the assistance that the Chinese government has offered over the years, which has greatly helped Micronesian economic and social development. He expressed the hope of further improving Micronesia's cooperation with China.

On the Taiwan issue, Killion said that the Micronesian government has adhered firmly to the One China policy since Micronesia and China established diplomatic relations and it will continue to observe this policy in the future.

The two vice presidents attended the signing ceremony of an economic and technological cooperation pact between China and Micronesia following their meeting.
