Premier Wen Jiabao Meets with President of the Federated States of Micronesia Joseph Urusemal

On March 24th, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met at the Great Hall of the People with visiting President of the Federated States of Micronesia Joseph Urusemal.

Wen Jiabao positively commented the current state of China-Micronesia relations and highly complimented Micronesia's adherence to the "one-China" policy. He pointed out China insisted that all countries are equal, big or small, and would like to promote continuously the friendly exchanges and cooperation with countries in the South Pacific on the basis of the "five principles of peaceful co-existence". When talking about future development of bilateral relations between the two countries, Wen Jiabo said the focus should be put on the following aspects:

First, strengthening governmental, parliamentarian and civil exchanges to enhance mutual trust;

Second, intensifying cooperation in fishery and agriculture so as to realize economic complementarities; and

Third, enhancing consultations on the South Pacific-related issues so as to contribute to stability and development of the region.

President Joseph Urusemal reiterated his country's adherence to the "one China" policy and fully agreed with Wen Jiabao's suggestions on further developing bilateral relations. He said he enjoyed talks with Chinese leaders during his visit to China and had seen in person the outstanding efforts the Chinese government has made in promoting economic development and people's livelihood. He added that Micronesia would adopt pro-active measures to implement the consensus reached between the two sides and continue to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
