On September 11, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao and President of the Federated States of Micronesia Emanuel Mori exchanged congratulatory messages on the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Sound development of bilateral ties has been achieved in the past 20 years, thanks to joint efforts of both sides, Hu said in his message. The friendly and reciprocal cooperation between the two countries has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples and has also helped promote stability and development in Pacific island countries at large, Hu said. The Chinese government and people cherish the friendship with Micronesia. At the new historical starting point, China is ready to work with Micronesia to further promote the sound and stable development of their friendly and cooperative relations based on the principles of political mutual respect and equal treatment, economic reciprocal cooperation and common development, as well as through close coordination and cooperation in regional and international affairs, the Chinese president said.

In his message, Mori said that a true friendship based on common interests and values has been formed between the two countries and that the one-China policy has become the cornerstone of the bilateral ties. The Micronesian side is deeply proud of the increasingly mature ties with China. Mori said his country remains firmly committed to developing the bilateral ties and pushing forward the partnership between the two countries.
