On the morning of May 2, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks in Shanghai with visiting President of Micronesia Emanuel Mori, who is here for a state visit and the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo.

Mori said that this is the first time for a developing country to play host to the World Expo and developing nations are proud of it and are willing to share this grand event. Hu said China welcomes and actively helps the Pacific island countries to participate in the Expo, expressing belief that it will open a new window for the Pacific island countries to reach out to the world. He looked forward to the spectacular exhibition of the Pacific island countries at the Expo.

Hu said Micronesia is a good friend and good partner of China among the Pacific island countries. The two countries have maintained frequent exchanges of high-level visits and political trust since the establishment of diplomatic ties 21 years ago. The two countries have been expanding exchanges in economy and trade, agriculture, fishery, culture and education, and engaged in sound cooperation in international affairs, he said. China is willing to make joint efforts with Micronesia to deepen friendly cooperation, Hu said. First, the two countries should keep closer political ties by further enhancing exchanges at high and other levels to improve understanding and trust of each other. Hu said China applauds Micronesia’s adherence to the one-China policy. Second, both sides should deepen pragmatic cooperation. Hu urged both sides to further tap complementary advantages and deepen cooperation in the fields of fishery, new energy and infrastructure construction. China will continue to offer economic and technological aid within its capability to Micronesia and encourage and support Chinese businesses to invest in the Pacific island country. Third, both sides should enhance cultural, educational and tourism exchanges. China will help more young people in Micronesia study in China with government scholarship, Hu said. Fourth, both sides should strengthen cooperation within multilateral frameworks. He suggested both sides expand communication and cooperation in international and regional affairs to safeguard common interests of the two countries and other developing nations.

Mori said Micronesia is glad to see the friendly relations with China are progressing constantly. Bilateral ties between the two countries are exemplary whether in international or regional areas. The Micronesian side is proud of it and hopes to further bilateral ties and push bilateral cooperation to a new high. Mori said he appreciates China's selfless assistance, which has helped to develop his country's education and health sector, and improve people's living standard. Micronesia is ready to work with China to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in telecommunication and infrastructure construction, he said. Closer cooperation among developing countries in addressing climate change is very important and Micronesia appreciates China’s major role in this regard.
