China's Special Envoy for the China-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue Du Qiwen Attends the 26th Post Forum Dialogue of the Pacific Islands Forum

On August 1, 2014, on behalf of the Chinese government, China's Special Envoy for the China-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue Du Qiwen attended the 26th Post Forum Dialogue of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) held in Koror of Palau. H.E. Zhang Lianyun, Chinese Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), accompanied Du Qiwen during relevant events.

Du Qiwen expressed in his speech at the meeting that, the Pacific island countries are important parts of the Asia-Pacific region and there would be no sustained development and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world without the prosperity in the Pacific island countries. As a dialogue partner of PIF, China attaches great importance to developing relations with the island counties. The Chinese government has consistently supported the island countries' efforts to achieve sustainable development and provides assistance within its capacity for the island countries under the framework of South-South cooperation, so as to help the island countries enhance their capacity of self-development and share the fruits of the Asia-Pacific development. Du Qiwen also introduced the measures taken by the Chinese side in recent years to strengthen cooperation with the island countries and to support the development of the island countries, and clarified the basic position of the Chinese government on the development agenda after 2015.

At the meeting, Du Qiwen also positively responded to the concern of the island countries about climate change, protection of the marine environment, resources and other aspects and introduced China's policies and measures in energy conservation and emission reduction, development of green economy as well as in helping the island countries enhance their abilities to adapt to climate change and other aspects.

The participants at the Forum positively commented on the relations between the Pacific island countries and China, welcomed various measures that the Chinese side announced to support the sustainable development in the island countries and highly appreciated the constructive role the Chinese side has played in promoting regional stability, unity and development. They hoped to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side in a wide range of fields and push forward the constant development of the bilateral friendly relations.

During the Post Forum Dialogue, Du Qiwen also met respectively with the leaders and representatives present at the meeting of the FSM, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Niue and other countries, as well as Secretary-General of PIF and representatives of other dialogue partners of the Forum.

Leaders or government representatives of the 15 PIF member states and government representatives of the 17 dialogue partners of the Forum, including the US, Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), the EU, India and Turkey, attended the Dialogue.
