On March 27, 2017, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Peter Christian of the Federated States of Micronesia at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of China-Micronesia strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development in 2014, both sides have deepened political mutual trust, strengthened mutually beneficial cooperation, and achieved new and important development in bilateral relations. China always advocates that all countries, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are equal members of the international community. All countries should respect each other, live in peace, carry out mutually beneficial cooperation and pursue common development. China considers the Federated States of Micronesia as a good friend and good partner in Pacific Island countries, and is willing to, together with Micronesia, maintain exchanges at high-level and all levels, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and consolidate the political foundation of bilateral relations. Both sides should deeply tap potentials, and steadily advance cooperation in tourism, agriculture, fishery, infrastructure and other fields. China welcomes Micronesia to participate in the "Belt and Road" construction to achieve win-win and shared development. China stands ready to, together with Micronesia, expand exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, youth and other fields as well as at local level, so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that under the current complicated and ever-changing international situation, developing countries are facing increasing problems. China and Micronesia share the same or similar views on many international and regional issues. China is willing to continuously enhance coordination with Micronesia on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate change and other major issues, so as to well safeguard the common interests of developing countries. China supports Micronesia to continue to play an active role in regional affairs, and stands ready to reinforce dialogues and communication with Micronesia on affairs of Pacific Island countries.

Peter Christian expressed that since the establishment of Micronesia-China diplomatic relations 28 years ago, bilateral relations have achieved vigorous development, which owes to the long-term mutual respect of each other's independence and sovereignty integrity between both countries. The Micronesian government firmly adheres to the one-China policy and supports China's position on climate change, globalization and other major issues. The country stands ready to enhance communication and coordination with China to address global challenges. Micronesia thanks China for providing support and assistance to the country's economic and social development for many years. Highly appreciating China's "Belt and Road" initiative, the country is willing to actively participate in practical cooperation under this framework.

After the talks, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of bilateral economic and technological cooperation agreements.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Peter Christian at the square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People. President Xi Jinping's wife Mme. Peng Liyuan, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Chen Changzhi, State Councilor Yan Jiechi, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Wang Jiarui and others were present.
