On May 9, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao met with Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa in the Great Hall of the People.

Wen Jiabao said that since establishing the diplomatic relationship in 1975 China and Samoa have respected and supported each other politically and carried out mutually beneficial cooperation and made common development in the economic field. Such relationship is a model of friendly cooperation between China and the island countries of South Pacific.

Wen Jiabao said that the Chinese government has always attached importance to China-Samoa relations. In order to push China-Samoa friendship to a new level, both sides should make great efforts to enhance the exchanges at all levels and between government agencies of the two countries, boost the mutual political trust; raise the level of economic and trade cooperation, expand the cooperation in such fields as agriculture, infrastructure construction, communications and tourism, strengthen the exchange and cooperation in the fields of culture, education and public health, deepen the mutual understanding and friendship between the people of both countries; strengthen the communication, coordination and collaboration in regional issues so as to jointly maintain the peace and stability of the South Pacific region.

Wen Jiabao expressed appreciation for the Samoan government for upholding the one-China policy in the long run.

Tuilaepa agreed with Wen Jiabao's comments and suggestions on bilateral relations. He said that this year is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Samoa. The relationship between both countries has developed well all along. The Samoan government and people appreciate China for the support and aid for many years and wish to strengthen the cooperation in economy, trade and tourism between the two countries. Tuilaepa reaffirmed that Samoa will unswervingly pursue the one–China policy and support China's grand cause of reunification. The Samoan side acknowledges China's full market economy status.

After the meeting, Premier Wen and Prime Minister Tuilaepa attended the signing ceremony of the economic and technological cooperation agreement between the two governments.

Before the meeting, Wen Jiabao held a welcoming ceremony for Tuilaepa on the square outside the East Gate. Officials including Pan Guiyu, Vice-chairman of the central committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Liu Guanren, the Chinese ambassador in Samoa also attended the ceremony.
