Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa in the Great Hall of the People on May 10, 2005.

Wu Bangguo said that Samoa is the first to establish diplomatic ties with China among South Pacific island countries. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 30 years ago, great changes have taken place in international situation. But bilateral relations develop steadily and both countries understand and support each other and have carried out comprehensive cooperation in various fields including economy and trade, which still presents a sound momentum. The people of both countries have benefited substantially from such cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen the exchanges with Samoa at all levels, deepen mutual political trust, expand cooperation fields and raise China-Samoa relationship to a new level.

Wu Bangguo said that the NPC of China attaches great importance to developing friendly exchanges and cooperation with the parliament of Samoa and is willing to strengthen bilateral exchanges and promote the comprehensive development of bilateral relations through bilateral or multilateral channels.

Wu Bangguo said Samoa adheres to one-China policy and understands and supports the adoption of Anti-Secession Law by the NPC of China. The Chinese side expressed heartfelt appreciation to Samoa for its firm opposition to Taiwan's independence.

Tuilaepa said that during this visit he has witnessed that the development of China has won great achievements. The beautiful future of Chinese development will offer more opportunities for both countries to expand the exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade and tourism. This year is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Samoa. It is hoped to take this chance to boost the development of friendly cooperative ties between the two countries

Tuilaepa iterated that Samoa firmly pursues one-China policy, opposes Two China or One China and One Taiwan and supports China for its reunification.
