On January 18, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with visiting Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Sato Kilman of the Republic of Vanuatu at the Great Hall of the People.

Wen noted that the Chinese government values China- Vanuatu relations. Since 1982 when the two countries established diplomatic ties the bilateral relations have witnessed long-term development. Both China and Vanuatu are developing countries and always respect and treat each other as equals on political issues, support each other in seeking common economic development and coordinate and collaborate with each other in international and regional affairs. Bilateral cooperation in areas including economy & trade, agriculture, fishery, culture & education, health and tourism keeps expanding. The friendship between China and Vanuatu is deeply rooted in the heart of people of both countries and sincerely supported by the people of Vanuatu. China admires the adherence of the new Vanuatu government to the one-China policy and stands ready to work with Vanuatu to promote the healthy, stable and comprehensive development of bilateral relations.

Kilman agrees on the comment of the Chinese side on the bilateral ties. He said that China is one of the major development partners and a sincere friend of Vanuatu. Over years China has provided huge assistance which plays a positive role in the economic and social development of Vanuatu. The Vanuatu government values the friendly relations with China very much and will continue to respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It will resolutely adhere, as always, to the one-China policy and refrain from conducting official contacts with Taiwan in whatever form.
