On the afternoon of February 25, 2005, President Hu Jintao met with Primer Minister Ham Lini of Vanuatu in the Great Hall of the People.

Reviewing the development of bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Vanuatu, Hu highly complimented the major contributions made by Primer Minister Ham Lini and other leaders of Vanuatu to the development of bilateral ties and expressed appreciations to the new administration of Vanuatu for adhering to the one-China policy proceeding from the overall interest of China-Vanuatu relations, refraining from conducting official contacts with Taiwan in whatever forms and supporting China's reunification undertaking. Hu said that at present the bilateral political mutual trust keeps deepening, economic and trade cooperation continues to grow and exchanges between political parties of the two countries remain frequent. The friendship between China and Vanuatu has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the two peoples, of which we feel most happy. Hu stressed that the Chinese government and people attach great importance to China-Vanuatu relations and stand ready to work with Vanuatu to review experiences, reinforce exchanges and consolidate cooperation so as to promote the sound, stable, sustained and in-depth development of China-Vanuatu relations in the new century towards the direction as agreed by both sides.

Lini emphasized that the government of Vanuatu firmly pursues the one-China policy and upholds that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. The one-China policy is supported by the Parliament and people of Vanuatu and we oppose any act going against the principle. He said after the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vanuatu and China the two countries have been respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity and conducted sincere cooperation. China has become an important partner of Vanuatu, and the support and assistance of the Chinese government and people help us achieve greater development. Vanuatu will work with China to explore new fields and channels of cooperation and promote the constant development of bilateral relations.
