Vanuatuan Leaders Meet with Li Zhaoxing

On August 5, 2006, Vanuatuan President Kalkot Matas Kelekele met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, and Prime Minister Ham Lini and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sato Kilman held separate talks with Li. Both sides exchanged views on the development of bilateral ties, as well as regional and international issues of common concern.

The Vanuatuan leaders said that over the past more than 20 years since the establishment of the China-Vanuatu diplomatic relations, bilateral ties have undergone steady and healthy development. They expressed their gratitude for China's support and called the Chinese people the Vanuatuan people's sincere friends and cooperation partners. They said adherence to the one-China policy is a consensus held by the Vanuatuan government and all Vanuatu's political parties. The Vanuatuan side is willing to make concerted efforts with China to consolidate bilateral ties, enhance all levels of exchanges and expand cooperation in the areas of agriculture, fishery, medical health and tourism in a bid to push bilateral ties for new progress, they added.

Li said that since the two countries established diplomatic ties, their mutual understanding and mutual political trust have deepened and bilateral cooperation in various fields has been fruitful. He added that China always attaches importance to its ties with Vanuatu and views it as an important partner, noting that a series of cooperation projects jointly undertaken by both sides have achieved sound economic returns and social benefits. He noted China is willing to boost the bilateral ties by strengthening the mutually beneficial cooperation with Vanuatu in more fields.
