On the afternoon of July 9, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Vanuatu's President Kalkot Mataskelekele at the Great Hall of the People. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on further developing friendly cooperative ties and reached broad consensus.

Hu said bilateral relations have witnessed rapid development since the establishment of diplomatic ties 25 years ago. China and Vanuatu have respected each other and treated each other as equals in the political area, maintained mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic domain, and supported each other in international and regional affairs. Hu expressed appreciation of Vanuatu's adherence to the one-China policy, support of China's reunification and its opposition to "Taiwan Independence". "It has been our consistent policy to cement the relationship with Vanuatu and other Pacific island countries," Hu said. "China would like to work with Vanuatu to strengthen all levels of exchanges and cooperation and make unremitting efforts to develop bilateral long-term stable friendship and cooperation," Hu said.

Hu said the Chinese government has always supported Vanuatu's efforts in developing economy and improving people's livelihood and has offered assistance within its available resources to the Pacific island country in order to enhance its capability of independent development. China encourages Chinese entrepreneurs to increase investment in Vanuatu in agriculture, forestry, fishery, communications and infrastructure, said Hu, expressing hope that both sides will keep closer cooperation and make joint efforts to implement relevant cooperation projects for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.

Mataskelekele said the two countries share traditional friendly relations. He expressed gratitude to China for its support during Vanuatu's campaign for national independence and the country's construction. Reaffirming his country's adherence to the one-China policy and support of China's reunification, he hoped to deepen the cooperation with China on agriculture, fishery, and tourism to achieve common development. He also said Vanuatu would like to take an active part in the forum between China and Pacific island countries on economic development.

Following the talks, the two heads of state jointly attended a signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between the two governments on economy and technology.

Prior to the talks, President Hu hosted a welcoming ceremony at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People for Mataskelekele's visit. Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, Vice Chairman Raidi of the NPC Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League Wu Guozhen, Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo, Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Cheng Shuping and other officials attended the ceremony.
