Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Lin Songtian Makes Representations to Angola over the Large-scale Detention of Chinese Citizens in Angola

2014-12-21 09:02

On December 21, 2014, Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Lin Songtian made an urgent appointment to meet with Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Angolan Embassy in China Fernando Carlos Camuamba and made representations over the large-scale detention of foreign people including Chinese citizens in Angola on December 19.

Lin expressed that the Angolan police arrested and detained hundreds of Chinese citizens indiscriminately, which infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens in Angola, causes panic to local law-abiding Chinese enterprises and personnel and sends wrong signals to the world. China expresses grave concerns on this issue and demands that Angola properly handle the follow-up of over 30 Chinese citizens still in detention in accordance with the law as soon as possible and ensure Chinese citizens adequate humanitarian treatment. Lin hoped that the Angolan side enforces the law in a civilized manner and safeguards the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and citizens in Angola so as to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
