On January 7, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with visiting Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Bonifacio Mitogo Edjang of Equatorial Guinea. Ma Zhaoxu spoke positively of Equatorial Guinea's important role in promoting the solutions to hotspot issues in Africa, saying that China is willing to work with Equatorial Guinea to enhance coordination and cooperation, jointly safeguard multilateralism, uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations (UN) and support the UN in playing an active part in international affairs.

Bonifacio Mitogo Edjang thanked China for vigorously supporting African countries in safeguarding national stability and achieving economic and social development. He said that Equatorial Guinea is willing to continue to strengthen cooperation in various areas, and intensify coordination in the UN and other occasions with the Chinese side, so as to safeguard the interests of developing countries.
