Spokesperson on the signing of the Accord on the Cessation of Hostilities between Ethiopia and Eritrea

Q:Ethiopia and Eritrea have signed the Accord on the Cessation of Hostilities. What is the comment of the Chinese side?


A:Hosted by the OAU,the Foreign Ministers of Ethiopia and Eritrea signed the Accord on the Cessation of Hostilities in Algiers on June 18, which marks an end of the two year-long military conflicts between the two countries, and an important and gratifying step towards the peaceful settlement of Ethiopia and Eritrea conflicts. As a friendly nation of both countries, China has heartily rejoiced and welcomes this result. We highly appraise the positive progress and the unremitting efforts made by the OAU for the peaceful solution.


The Chinese Government sincerely hopes that Ethiopia and Eritrea will continue their active cooperation with the coordination of OAU and international community, and achieve an early realization of a final peaceful settlement of the territorial dispute. China is willing, together with the international community, to play a positive role in the peaceful settlement of territorial dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
