On June 19, 2006, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council and Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor attended and cut the ribbons for the completion ceremony of the road rehabilitation and expansion project linking Accra with Kumasi built with assistance of the Chinese government.

Speaking at the ceremony, Wen, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, extended warm congratulations on the completion of the project. He pointed out that the road is another symbol of bilateral friendship and cooperation and adds a new link to China-Ghana traditional friendship. The Chinese and Ghanaian governments attach great importance to the project. Having encountered numerous difficulties and worked closely, the technicians and engineers of the two countries finally completed this broad and even road with sweat and wisdom.

Wen noted that the Chinese government has provided Ghana with sincere and friendly assistance within its best capacity and helped Ghana build a number of projects including the National Theater, a hospital and road renewal project. The Chinese government will as always support the national construction undertaking of Ghana and join hands with Ghana to explore new ways of mutually beneficial cooperation, inject new dynamism into bilateral cooperation and realize common progress.

President Kufuor in his speech thanked the Chinese government for its assistance to the road project and praised the hard work of the Chinese construction company. He said that the completion and operation of the road will benefit the Ghanaian people and even those people living along the road in western Africa.

The Accra to Kumasi road renewal project is undertaken by China Railway Engineering Corporation and formally started construction in May 2004. The road is altogether 18 km long and serves as a major trunk linking Ghana's capital with its central region and the landlocked neighbors of Ghana with its Tema port.

Several thousands of people, including members of the Chinese delegation, Ghanaian government officials and representatives of local communities and students, attended the completion ceremony.
