Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Ministers of Four African Countries

On June 25, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met respectively with Foreign Minister Sibusiso Moyo of Zimbabwe, Foreign Minister Lesego Makgothi of Lesotho, Foreign Minister Marcel Amon-Tanoh of Côte d'Ivoire and Foreign Minister Simeon Oyono Esono Angue of Equatorial Guinea in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that during the exchanges with African countries, China has always adhered to equality in international affairs among countries irrespective of their sizes. China takes a clear-cut stand in supporting African countries in their efforts to safeguard sovereignty and security and adhere to independent development, supports African countries in exploring development paths in line with their own national conditions, and supports African countries in playing a more important role in international and regional affairs, safeguards the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of China, Africa and other developing countries and promotes the construction of an open world economic system.

Foreign Minister of Zimbabwe said that the gathering of African countries in Beijing this time shows the African side's firm determination to implement the follow-up actions of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Last year, bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and China entered a new stage and were upgraded to the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. Committed to achieving a smooth transition of domestic politics and economy, the Zimbabwean side will adhere to making decisions independently in foreign affairs, and is willing to strengthen strategic communication and cooperation with the Chinese side.

Foreign Minister of Lesotho said that although Lesotho and China are separated by vast oceans, the two countries are good friends, good partners and good brothers, and always support each other. The principle featuring sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith with Africa brought forth by the Chinese side is widely welcomed by the people of Lesotho. The African people, including the people of Lesotho, regard China as a true friend and development partner. On the basis of equal treatment and mutually beneficial cooperation, China has given Africa strong support in time of adversity. On this issue, the African people are in the best position to judge. The Lesotho side opposes the interference in China's internal affairs by any external forces, firmly adheres to the one-China principle, supports the 1992 Consensus, and supports China's early realization of the great cause of its reunification.

Foreign Minister of Côte d'Ivoire expressed his congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Last year, the FOCAC Beijing Summit was productive, reached the important and broad consensus, and showed the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Based on the principle of friendship, sincerity, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, China-Africa cooperation advocates that each country has the right to choose a path best suited to its national conditions and development stage. China has made positive contributions to the connectivity of Africa. Without connectivity, there is no development and prosperity of the African continent. The Côte d'Ivoire side is willing to actively participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and share development opportunities. The Côte d'Ivoire side appreciates the Chinese side's support for the concept of multilateralism, because only multilateralism can bring stability, security and conflict resolution to the world.

Foreign Minister of Equatorial Guinea said that the Chinese people always stand with the African people and make contributions to the African continent. Equatorial Guinea thanks the Chinese side for proposing the eight major initiatives, as it is conducive to enhancing the well-being of the African people. The Equatorial Guinean side will continue to adhere to the one-China principle, firmly support each other on issues involving the core interests of both sides and defend multilateralism together. The Equatorial Guinean side is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side in all fields and learn the Chinese side's development experience to help Equatorial Guinea achieve economic transformation and diversified development.

After the meeting, Wang Yi and the four foreign ministers also witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements respectively.
