On June 11 local time, Vice Premier Liu Yandong in Geneva met with Director-General Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun of the World Health Organization (WHO) and held discussions with the envoys of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the African Union (AU) to Geneva.

Liu Yandong said that preventing and controlling the epidemic transmission is a shared responsibility of the international community. After the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa last March, the Chinese government rendered full support to the WHO and related countries in fighting against Ebola, and Chinese medical teams also received sincere care from the governments and people of the epidemic area. China is willing to work with the WHO to consolidate global public health security in the post-Ebola era. China will, in accordance with the principle of "Africa's need, consent and participation", actively support and participate in the construction of the disease prevention and control system as well as the medical and health infrastructure in Africa, so as to help African countries enhance their capabilities to deal with public health emergencies.

Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun said that the WHO appreciates and thanks China for its considerable support in helping Africa fight against the Ebola epidemic. The Chinese government has established an effective and powerful system in dealing with public health crises and the WHO hopes to enhance its cooperation with China and popularize China's experience.

The African envoys said that China was the first to offer a helping hand when West African countries fell into the difficult time of the Ebola epidemic, which brought home to the African people that "a friend in need is a friend indeed". They also expressed their belief that China will continue its support and assistance to African countries.
