Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Yvette Sylla of Madagascar

On June 30, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Yvette Sylla of Madagascar, who is in China to attend the third China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo.

Wang Yi said that China and Madagascar have been committed to mutual respect, treating each other as equals, and mutually beneficial cooperation, with bilateral relations maintaining the momentum of steady development. China highly appreciates Madagascar's commitment to the one-China principle, and China also firmly supports Madagascar in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, exploring a development path that suits its national conditions, and continuing to play a unique role in Africa and on the international stage. China is ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides, make intensified efforts to cultivate people-to-people friendship, and open up new prospects for China-Madagascar relations.

Wang Yi said that the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has become a banner for solidarity and cooperation between China and Africa and an important platform for South-South cooperation. The achievements of China-Africa cooperation can be seen everywhere across the African continent, benefiting the people of African countries. China appreciates Madagascar's contribution to China-Africa cooperation, and stands ready to work with Madagascar to fully implement FOCAC outcomes, and boost the development and revitalization of African countries.

Sylla said that through this visit, she deeply felt that China's success is attributed to the able guidance of President Xi Jinping, the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, and the millennia-old Chinese civilization. Madagascar expects to draw on China's development experience and expand bilateral cooperation in such fields as energy transition, digital economy, and hybrid rice. Madagascar firmly pursues the one-China principle, supports China's position on issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xizang, and Xinjiang, among others, and opposes politicizing human rights issues. Madagascar supports and stands ready to take an active part in the Belt and Road Initiative and a series of important global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping. Sylla thanked China for sincerely supporting Africa's development and strongly safeguarding the interests of developing countries, and expressed confidence that China will play a greater leading role.

Wang Yi said that China will firmly follow the path of peaceful development, and work together with developing countries to achieve common revitalization while pursuing its own development. China is ready to work with Madagascar to jointly uphold non-interference in internal affairs, which is a basic norm governing international relations, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, foster a more just and equitable international order, and promote greater democracy in international relations.
