On January 25 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Mauritian Prime Minster Paul Raymond Berenger at the Great Hall of the People.

Wu commented positively on China-Mauritius relationship. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Mauritius, bilateral relations have been growing smoothly. The two countries are dedicated to developing friendly cooperative relations and building mutual trust in politics. China and Mauritius maintains frequent high-level contacts and strengthens the communications and mutual support in national construction and international affairs. The economic and trade ties have been growing and there still exist great potentials for further growth. China values the traditional friendship with Mauritius and appreciated the Mauritian government for upholding one-China policy.

Wu said that NPC of China and the Mauritian Parliament have maintained long-term friendly exchanges and cooperation, which plays a positive in consolidating the basis of bilateral ties, deepening the friendship between the peoples, and expanding economic and trade cooperation. The NPC of China attaches importance to developing friendly relations with Mauritius and is willing to strengthen the exchanges and cooperation.

Wu also introduced the democracy and legal construction in China to the visiting guests.

Berenger said that Mauritius is satisfied with the development of Mauritius-China relations and is confident in the prospect of bilateral relations. The Speaker of the Mauritian Parliament, Mr Prem Ramnah, headed a delegation to China two years ago and his visit scored positive results. The Mauritian side is happy to see that the Mauritian Parliament and the NPC of China maintains friendly exchanges and cooperation, which have advanced the friendship and cooperation between the two countries and peoples.
